Google announced this morning that the next version of Android, codenamed Android N, will officially be Android Nougat, and not Nutella,
Google announced on Snapchat today that Android N, the latest version of Android, will now go by Android Nougat. The announcement comes after the company said at I/O last month that users could submit suggestions for the name online.
Nougat is the latest dessert-themed version of Android, due out later this summer. The release, initially announced in March and currently on its second (and mostly stable) beta, brings new features like an improved notification shade and split-screen multitasking to the mobile OS, while also improving on features like Doze that came with Marshmallow last year. The release also has Daydream, Google’s new VR platform, baked in, though it’ll only be supported by Daydream-ready handsets running the OS.
The proverbial cat is finally out of the bag. As is tradition with new Android version names, Googlers crowded around to see the unveiling of the newest Android mascot for Android N. The curtain was pulled away and we were left with…

It’s at this time that we congratulate Lauren Goode on her great guess and her great cat (also named Nougat).

In a post over at the official Android OS Google+ page, the Alphabet subsidiary has officially taken the wraps off Nougat as its official name. In case you didn’t know, Nougat is defined as a family of confections made with sugar or honey, roasted nuts, whipped egg whites, and sometimes chopped candied fruit. The consistency of nougat is chewy, and it is used in a variety of candy bars and chocolates.
That leaves all speculations with the name, but one thing’s for sure: we’re set to see the new Android OS version landing later this year, with Nexus devices getting it ahead of everyone else.
Yup, Android Nougat. Though, I’d have to say, the new mascot looks more like a nut bar or nut roll. I personally think either of those would have been better names, even if my ultimate best case scenario would have been Android Nerds. I know Google worked out a deal with Kit Kat several versions ago, so maybe they weren’t in the mood to have to license another snack food for an Android version name, but really Android Nerds would have fit so perfectly I just wouldn’t have been able to handle it.
Before all of the torches and pitchforks come out, I am, and have been an avid Android user since the G1 days, and would have proudly worn the Android Nerds name like a badge of honor. Even something like Android Nuts would have been great. We can all be a bit nutty at times, so maybe the version name of our favorite robot-based mobile OS could reflect that as well?
